The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Bengkulu University (UNIB) was legalized based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 195 /O/1999 on August 10th, 1999 concerning the establishment of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Bengkulu.

Since it was officially established in 1999, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UNIB accepted its first students in 2001 with the opening of four study programs at once (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics). In terms of quantity, the equipment to support research is relatively readily available. All study programs at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences have won development grants in various schemes, including “UNIB due like”, “SP4”, and “PHK A-1”, and lastly in 2015 two study programs at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UNIB received “BOPA”, a grant for accreditation stimulus. The Study Program based on the results of self-evaluation arranges a development program so as to obtain an increase in institutional capacity and service quality. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UNIB is given the authority to use the Basic Science Laboratory Building to meet the needs for laboratory room infrastructure (Biology Laboratory, Physics Laboratory, and Chemistry Laboratory) and Building no. V as the infrastructure for the Mathematics Laboratory room. In addition to developing infrastructure, improving the quality of processes and results is an urgent concern of the academic community, considering that the current era of global competition demands that the world of education has given priority to aspects of improving quality and competitiveness.

Since 2005, the direction of the development of higher education institutions, especially state universities, has been in the Vision and Mission platform of the Ministry of Education and Culture (in 2005 the Ministry of National Education) with three strategic program pillars, namely expanding access, increasing competitiveness, and governance. In terms of increasing competitiveness, the performance of universities is not limited to increasing achievements on the basis of internal or local parameters but is also encouraged to take part in world affairs, especially in the field of research and cooperation. In this context, in 2013, Bengkulu University set a vision to become a world-class university in 2025 (STATUTA UNIB, 2013).

Responding to these challenges, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UNIB has determined that the strategic plan for the next nine years is a period that must change the orientation of processes and outputs to improve quality. Research activities and scientific publications in accredited journals and international journals must be a key indicator of the performance of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UNIB lecturers, as well as an efficient (on time), standardized, and effective education process in producing competent graduates must be a key parameter for the performance of faculty management and competence of lecturers and education staff. With the increasing number of research activities, the demands on faculty institutions to play a greater role in research management will be even greater. The resources used must be effective so that the research results provide maximum benefits not only for the researchers but also for the wider community.

Through the Decree of the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 535/KPT/I/2016 on 27 December 2016, concerning the unification of study programs at the Bengkulu Province Health Polytechnic to the Bengkulu University which was strengthened by the Decree of the Chancellor of the University of Bengkulu No. 461/UN30/HK/2017 on the first of March 2017, concerning the management of the Diploma Three health sciences study program managed by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Bengkulu. There are several diploma study programs in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UNIB, namely the D3 Nursing study program, the D3 Midwifery study program, D3 Pharmacy study program. Until 2018, there were 13 study programs under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UNIB: Bachelor study program (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, Geophysics, Pharmacy), Diploma three study program (Lab. Science, Nursing, Midwifery, Pharmacy) and Master Program (S2 Statistics and S2 Chemistry)
