
Department of Biology FMIPA UNIB Holds Community Service through Strengthen Literacy for Economic Improvement and Science Knowledge in Pelabai Village, Lebong, Bengkulu
The Department of Biology FMIPA UNIB held community service activities in Pelabai Village, Lebong Regency, Bengkulu Province through 7 activities with the fields of health, plant, animal and environmental studies. The potential of Pelabai Village in the agricultural and fisheries sectors and supported by qualified human resources makes Biology Department Lecturers interested in sharing knowledge in accordance with their fields of study.
The activity, which took place at the Village Hall and Field, was enthusiastically welcomed by local residents. The community service team chaired by Meliya Wati with members Novia Duya and Darmi and Biology Department students (Melan Eliza, Lola Sultitania, and Gress Pinesta) raised a theme related to “Processing Organic Waste by Applying the Concept of the Ecoenzyme System”. Meliya Wati hopes that through this activity the community can utilize kitchen waste such as vegetables and fruits to be processed into something of economic value such as this ecoenzyme.
While the community service team chaired by Helmiyetti, with members Jarulis and Dedi Satriawan who were assisted by students (Ahmad Fakhri Utama and Gian Tadeo Iknatius Hutapea) carried out the service with the theme “Utilization of Magot to Support Fish Cultivation”. Pelabai Village itself has a good water source so that residents use it to make fish ponds. This potential was utilized by Helmiyetti. “Hopefully, by utilizing magot, which is rich in protein, it can increase the yield of fish farming in Pelabai Village,” said Helmiyetti.
Meanwhile, the team led by Risky Hadi Wibowo with members Evelyne Riandini and Steffanie Nurliana conducted socialization and education related to “Introduction to Skin Fungus and How to Handle It”. The team, assisted by Biology Masters students (Livia Sinaga and Monika Thamara), introduced the types of skin fungi to the Pelabai Village community. Risky Hadi Wibowo hopes that through this activity, the community can recognize and overcome problems related to skin fungi that are often found among the community.
Another thing with the service team chaired by Sipriyadi with members Rochmah Supriati and Safniyeti and Biology Masters students (Sherlo Adha Maulana and Nurul Aini). They studied “Fungi Causing Damage to Residents’ Agricultural Crops and How to Control Them”. Through this introduction, Sipriyadi hopes to train the knowledge of the Pelabai Village community in recognizing pathogenic fungi so as to reduce damage to agricultural crops such as rubber.
Pelabai Village itself has been developing Oyster Mushroom Cultivation since 2022. However, the yields obtained were not as expected so that this business did not develop. Based on this, the service team led by Welly Darwis with members RR Sri Astuti and Safniyeti and students (Raul Fadhilon, Latifah Nurhasanah, and Ratu Intan Anugrah) conducted “Efforts to Improve Sterilization of Oyster Mushroom Cultivation”. Pelabai Village Head, Sisvi Kartika welcomed this service, because she received input related to the obstacles that occur in oyster mushroom cultivation experienced by her community. He hopes that the oyster mushroom cultivation that has existed in Pelabai Village can be active and advanced again.
The community service team led by Santi Nurul Kamilah with members Dian Fita Lestari and Fatimatuzzahra along with students (Muhammad Farid Fadhullah, Rosi Triana Sari and Astri Clarisa Andini) targeted mothers to conduct “Introduction to the Use of Epoxy Resin as Souvenir Making Material”. Pelabai Village Head, Sisvi Kartika appreciated this activity, she hopes that it can be a provision for the community to develop a souvenir making business, especially for mothers in Pelabai Village.
The last activity carried out by the Biology Department community service team chaired by Hery Haryanto with members Rizwar, Fatimatuzzahra, and Putri Lisya Anggaraini and students (Dwika Natalia and Luci Yuliana) was “Counseling and Installation of Biopore Water Infiltration in the Home Yard”. Hery Haryanto hopes that this activity can increase public awareness of the importance of making water infiltration in the yard to prevent flooding.
The community service activities carried out by the Biology Department of FMIPA UNIB Lecturer team in Pelabai Village, Tubei District, Lebong Regency, Bengkulu Province were closed by handing over a certificate to the Village Head, Sisvi Kartika and handing over magotkits, biopore water absorption pipes, ecoenzymes, and souvenirs from the use of epoxy resin to the community. Lecturers of the Department of Biology FMIPA UNIB hope that through the activities that have been carried out can increase community literacy so that it can support economic improvement and scientific knowledge.
