Guest Lecture by Dr. Wilson Novarino: Inspiring Biology Students to Preserve Sumatra’s Biodiversity
On Monday, December 9, 2024, the Department of Biology at FMIPA Universitas Bengkulu held a guest lecture titled “The Role of Biology Graduates in Efforts to Preserve Sumatra’s Biodiversity”. This special event featured Dr. Wilson Novarino, M.Si, Head of the Department of Biology at Universitas Andalas, as the keynote speaker. Held at the Botany Laboratory of Universitas Bengkulu, the lecture attracted enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and the academic community.
Encouraging Exploration of Research Potential in Bengkulu
In his lecture, Dr. Wilson Novarino not only discussed the role of Biology graduates in biodiversity conservation but also motivated students to explore the vast research potential in Bengkulu. He highlighted the region’s extraordinary biodiversity, which offers significant opportunities for students to contribute to conservation efforts while building their research expertise.
“Bengkulu is an invaluable natural laboratory. If you can unlock its potential, your research can make a significant impact on science and conservation,” said Dr. Wilson.
Tips for Becoming an Outstanding Biology Student
Dr. Wilson shared three key tips for Biology students to excel and become competitive in their field:
Adaptation: Students must adapt to advancements in science and technology.
Exploration: Do not hesitate to try new things, whether in laboratory research or field exploration.
Collaboration: Build networks and collaborate with various parties, including fellow students, lecturers, and external partners.
According to him, these three principles are essential for becoming a successful biologist.
One of the most memorable moments was when Dr. Wilson shared a quote that reflects the passion of a biologist: “Being a Biologist won’t make you rich, but it will take you on journeys to see the beauty of the world.”
This statement resonated deeply with the audience, reminding them that a career in Biology offers more than material rewards it provides opportunities to understand and appreciate nature’s wonders.
This guest lecture not only provided new insights but also instilled a sense of enthusiasm and optimism in Biology students to contribute to biodiversity conservation. Inspired by Dr. Wilson Novarino, it is hoped that Biology graduates from Universitas Bengkulu will become agents of change actively involved in safeguarding the rich natural heritage of Sumatra and Indonesia.
May the spirit conveyed through this event drive students to continuously grow and contribute to science and environmental preservation.
