Scientific Discussion – May Edition, Undergraduate Statistics Program: Exploring Small Area Estimation through GLMM / Diskusi Ilmiah Bulan Mei Prodi S1 Statistika: Menyibak Tirai Small Area Estimation dengan GLMM

Bengkulu, May 14, 2025 — In an effort to strengthen the academic culture and broaden the scientific insights of its faculty members, the Undergraduate Statistics Program at the University of Bengkulu held its Monthly Scientific Discussion on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. The event took place in the Statistics Department Meeting Room and was attended by faculty members both in person and online.

This May edition featured an internal speaker, Dr. Etis Sunandi, S.Si., M.Si., a permanent lecturer in the Undergraduate Statistics Program, who delivered a presentation entitled: “Small Area Estimation: Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) for Small Areas.”

In his presentation, Dr. Etis comprehensively explained the Small Area Estimation (SAE) approach, a method used to generate parameter estimates for small domains or areas with limited sample data. He elaborated on how the Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) can be utilized to improve estimation accuracy under data constraints, and shared several case studies demonstrating SAE applications in social and economic fields.

The discussion took place in a conducive scientific atmosphere, with questions from participants mainly focusing on the methodological aspects of the presented model, including underlying assumptions, selection of response distributions, parameter estimation approaches, as well as the advantages and limitations of GLMM in real-world implementations.

The Undergraduate Statistics Program remains committed to regularly organizing monthly scientific forums as part of its strategy to enhance academic quality and support the university’s threefold mission of education, research, and community service. This initiative is also expected to foster collaborative and innovative research that aligns with societal needs and regional development goals.
