Chemistry Undergraduate Program of The University of Bengkulu Holds International General Lecture on Green Chemistry and Sustainable Textile Materials

Bengkulu, October 14, 2025 – The Undergraduate Chemistry Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the University of Bengkulu, organized an International General Lecture entitled “Green Chemistry World: From Oxides to Textiles” on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. The lecture was conducted online via Zoom.

The event featured Dr. Maria Laura Tummino from CNR–STIIMA (National Research Council, Institute of Intelligent Industrial Technologies and Systems for Advanced Manufacturing), Italy, as the keynote speaker. The lecture took place at 02.00 p.m. Indonesian Time (09.00 a.m. Italy Time) and was attended by lecturers and students of the Chemistry Undergraduate Program. The session was moderated by Laela Mukaromah, M.Si., from Sriwijaya University and hosted by Prof. Dr. Sal Prima Yudha S. from the University of Bengkulu together with Prof. Dr. Poedji Loekitowati Hariani from Sriwijaya University.

In her presentation, Dr. Maria Laura Tummino discussed recent research developments in green chemistry, particularly focusing on sustainable materials and environmental chemistry. One of the highlighted topics was the utilization of waste wool derivatives as functional materials for textile applications, including their role as phosphate adsorbents and auxiliary materials for natural textile dyeing. The lecture emphasized a zero-waste approach, where non-conventional wool waste is converted into value-added materials through alkaline treatment, metal impregnation, and thermal processing.

The presentation also addressed the broader role of green chemistry in environmental sustainability, highlighting how innovative material design can support waste reduction, wastewater treatment, and eco-friendly textile production. The lecture provided valuable insights into interdisciplinary research linking chemistry, materials science, and environmental engineering.

This international general lecture aimed to broaden students’ global perspectives, enhance their understanding of sustainable chemistry practices, and encourage research-oriented learning aligned with environmental responsibility. The activity reflects the Chemistry Undergraduate Program’s commitment to international academic collaboration and continuous quality improvement. Participants received e-certificates as part of the academic enrichment program. [Vicka Andini]
