Introducing Applied Geophysical Survey Methods: A Field Workshop for Geophysics Students

The Geophysics Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Bengkulu, successfully conducted a field workshop aimed at introducing various geophysical survey methods to students of the 2024 cohort. The workshop took place over four days, from Thursday afternoon, April 17, to Sunday, April 20, 2025, at Laguna Beach, Kaur Regency, Bengkulu Province.

A total of 40 students from the 2024 cohort participated in this activity. The workshop provided foundational understanding and hands-on experience in geophysical data acquisition using the following methods:

  1. Geomagnetic Method,
  2. Electrical Resistivity Method,
  3. Microtremor Method, and
  4. Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW).

Students were divided into four groups, with each group receiving rotating sessions involving technical explanation and practical data acquisition using the respective methods. This structure was designed to ensure comprehensive exposure to each survey technique commonly employed in applied geophysics.

The activity commenced with departure from the University of Bengkulu campus on Thursday afternoon and concluded on Sunday with a reflection and group discussion session. Throughout the workshop, students showed great enthusiasm and active engagement in all phases of the fieldwork.

This workshop is expected to enhance the students’ technical skills in field data acquisition, as well as to foster teamwork and collaborative abilities—both of which are essential components in professional geophysical practices.
