Preparation of Natural Herbicides Using Acid and Salt for Weed Control in Household Yards: A Community Program for Housewives in Talang Pauh Village

The problem of weeds in yards is not a new one faced by housewives in Talang Pauh Village. The use of chemical herbicides widely available on the market often raises concerns regarding health impacts, environmental pollution, and the risk of chemical residues in the soil. Therefore, safer, easier-to-make, affordable, and environmentally friendly alternatives for weed control are needed. This activity aims to introduce and train housewives in Talang Pauh Village in making a natural herbicide based on vinegar and salt as a solution for weed control in yards.

A direct survey conducted by the University of Bengkulu independent community service team in Talang Pauh Village revealed that the use of vinegar and salt as natural herbicides has never been widely used by the community, due to limited knowledge. The community has greatly benefited from the independent community service activities, including reducing the risk of poisoning from the use of chemical herbicides. Another advantage is that natural ingredients are easily and inexpensively obtained, as they are readily available in the kitchen as cooking spices.

From the results of the implementation of Unib’s independent community service activities in 2025, the 2025 independent community service team consisting of Supiyati, S.Si, M.Si., Suhendra, S.Si, M.T. and Halauddin, S.Si, M.T. as the Head of Community Service has provided a solution for housewives in Talang Pauh Village to utilize vinegar and salt as natural herbicides and can make these natural herbicides to control weeds/grass in the yard.
