Scientific Discussion of the Undergraduate Statistics Program UNIB Explores Machine Learning-Based Earthquake Forecasting Models/ Diskusi Ilmiah Prodi S1 Statistika UNIB Bahas Model Peramalan Gempa Berbasis Machine Learning

Bengkulu, April 2, 2026 – The Undergraduate Statistics Study Program at Universitas Bengkulu (UNIB) once again organized a scientific discussion activity, which is planned to be held regularly every month. This activity serves as an academic forum for lecturers and students to exchange ideas, deepen their knowledge, and keep up with the latest developments in statistics and its applications.

This scientific discussion featured the Head of the Undergraduate Statistics Study Program at UNIB, Dr. Pepi Novianti, S.Si., M.Si., as the keynote speaker. On this occasion, she presented a research plan entitled “Development of a Machine Learning-Based Temporal Extreme Value Model for Probabilistic Earthquake Forecasting in Bengkulu Province.”

In her presentation, Dr. Pepi explained that Bengkulu Province is a region with a high level of vulnerability to earthquake activity. Therefore, analytical approaches are required that are not only accurate but also capable of capturing the extreme characteristics of earthquake occurrence data. One of the proposed approaches is the integration of extreme value theory with machine learning techniques within a temporal modeling framework.

Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of integrating classical statistical methods with modern technologies such as machine learning to address real-world problems, particularly in the field of disaster management. The developed model is expected to contribute scientifically to earthquake risk mitigation efforts in the Bengkulu region.

The discussion session was conducted interactively, with high enthusiasm from participants consisting of lecturers and students. Various questions and responses were raised, particularly regarding model implementation, data sources, and the potential for further research development.

Through this scientific discussion, the Undergraduate Statistics Study Program at UNIB hopes that similar activities can continue consistently every month as part of a productive and innovative academic culture. Moreover, this forum is expected to encourage the emergence of new research ideas that are relevant to societal needs, especially in the context of data analysis and evidence-based decision-making.
